La Candeleria School Project

For the past several years our club has actively supported the La Candeleria Boarding School near Cabo San Lucas in Mexico. It serves the children of impoverished families in this isolated area who otherwise would have no opportunity for even a primary education. It is K-12 school where they children remain all week, going home only on weekend and vacations — as most of them live too far away to be able to commute on a daily basis.

Turlock Rotarian George Williams first learned of this school several years ago while vacationing and attending local Rotary meetings in Cabo San Lucas. Upon his return home he convinced our club to make a series of substantial donations to the school. He also convinced District 5220 to provide matching grants for some of thee donations.

Initially we provided several dozen mattresses so that all of the children could have clean and comfortable sleeping conditions. We later delivered numerous school supplies, including Spanish Language books. Most recently we gave nearly $1000 to replace the water heaters so that the students could shower & wash with warm water.
